Dear Valued Customer,

On September 29, 2022, we hosted the virtual SAP MaxAttention Innovation workshop covering Intelligent Custom Code Management and its use case related to (c)lean core on SAP S/4HANA. We have also covered extensibility and the options for replatforming with the help of the SAP Business Technology Platform.

A clean core allows faster software deployment as well as easier adoption of both SAP innovations and regulatory changes to the software. For IT service providers, it means being able to offer upgrade projects at a fixed price. For your business, it means a reduction in Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) without jeopardizing flexibility.

The speakers from SAP MaxAttention Premium Hub teams contributed to this event. The workshop offered an interactive platform for SAP Premium Engagement customers to learn the importance of a clean core on S/4HANA and how it can help reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and make future upgrades non-event from Custom Code point of view.

The event started with Balazs Juhos providing an overview on the definition of clean core and how customers can make utilization of extensibility to make it happen. As part of that he elaborated on the different extensibility options and different use cases to decouple custom business logic: In-App (Key User) Extensibility, Side-by-Side extensions, and Developer Extensibility.

Balazs Juhos also explained SAP Application Extension Methodology which provides a structured, technology-agnostic approach for customers and partners to define an organization-specific extension strategy, that guides and supports the extension implementation of standard business applications. This enables Enterprise Architects to assess extension use cases and define an extension target solution

The event continued with a presentation from Juergen Mahler about Intelligent Custom Code Management (ICCM). Juergen explained how ICCM can resolve custom code management challenges such as outdated custom development, high custom code TCO and lack of flexibility/innovation capabilities.

Juergen Mahler also explained that ICCM can create nearly 100% transparency about the existing Custom Code to identify potential candidates for Retirement, Redesign and Replatforming to make and keep the core of SAP S/4HANA system (c)lean. This is carried out using SAP`s innovative clustering analysis:

Juergen Mahler shared the outcome of ICCM Clustering analysis and how this output can be used for a High-level Custom Code transformation roadmap containing clustered custom code objects and categorization into the following categories:

  • Retirement (clustered objects w/o technical usage

  • candidates for immediate retirement (depending on logon duration))

  • Keep as is (Remediation)

  • Rethink and Redesign candidates, including cluster objects mapping against processes with AKH and Customer experience

The last session was conducted by Ashok M Kumar to cover the principle to build extensions to keep the core (c)lean and how to identify the opportunities for replatforming based on the outcome of ICCM Clustering analysis. Ashok M Kumar also explained the extension design use cases and how to use SAP Business Technology Platform to develop side-by-side extensions either using Cloud Application Programming (CAP) or Restful ABAP Programming (RAP).

Now it is your turn to take to start your custom code (c)lean core journey! SAP MaxAttention can help you to accelerate your move to the desired state and make your system ready for future smooth upgrades and innovations. Please reach out to us to discuss the next step of your Custom Code Management roadmap related to Clean Core options and we will be ready to provide you with all the required knowledge to make it happen.
